And for my extra ambitious kids:

Ms. Ciccone,

I’m the organizer for the outreach program of the Washington Chromatography Discussion Group (WCDG). We’re a small group with scientists from several federal labs and private companies in the DC area. We have a demonstration called the “Great Grape Soda Race” that we’ve run at Rockville Science Day and the Science and Engineering Festival. It’s a visible version of the kind of separations equipment commonly used in pharmaceutical and environmental labs.

I’m touching base because we’re looking for volunteers who would like to help us man the booth for an hour or two at a time during the upcoming events. We’ll have scientists on hand to provide training and oversight, and talk through some of the lessons that can be associated with the demo. We’ve found that we have teachable moments for everyone from preschoolers to parents.

Please let us know if you or your students would be interested. We have a lot of fun at these events, but the demo is popular enough that you can’t have too many explainers on hand.

Thanks again for participating in this. It should be a really fun day. Kate Rimmer, one of my partners in crime, set up a VolunteerSpot link to help us track our coverage. If you could distribute the link to your kids, they could sign up for a time slot. If they want to do multiples, they can, but they’ll probably want some time to check out the other exhibits while they’re there.

We're using VolunteerSpot (the leading online signup and reminder tool) to organize our upcoming activity.
